Taking Cloth Diapers on the road, part 2

Washing

You may be wondering how you will wash these Diaper Storagecloth diapers if you plan to be gone for more than a couple of days.  Again, you have several options.

First, if you are staying in a hotel, most of them have a laundry center.  Be sure to bring your cloth diaper detergent as well as some quarters.  You might even forgo the initial cold rinse just this once to save the money for the extra cycle.  If your hotel does not have a laundry center, you can surely find a laundry mat in the town/city where you are vacationing.

I have also read of people who washed their diapers by hand in the bath tub and then laid them out to air dry.  I have never done this, and it sounds like a lot of work.  But, if you are desperate, it is an option.

If you will be staying with family or friends, you can probably use their washing machine to clean your diapers mid-way through your stay.  Just be sure to ask ahead of time if it is okay.  Some people have a real aversion to cloth diapers, and they may not feel comfortable having them in their washing machine.  If that is the case, just plan to use a local laundry mat.

I read last week about one other ingenious option! You could locate a local cloth diaper service in the area where you will be vacationing.  Just sign up for service during the dates of your stay.  They will deliver the clean diapers to your door, and pick up the soiled diapers.  Be advised that these diapers will likely be prefolds and not pockets!  Some services do require you to have your own covers, so be sure to ask.

Wipes homemade wipes

You may choose to travel with disposable wipes rather than cloth wipes.  I have done this several times.  But…if you will need to wash your diapers, you can just as easily wash your wipes.

I prefer my wipes pre-moistened.  For traveling, I pre-moisten a bunch and keep them in my mini wet bag.  I take along a box of dry wipes for use at the destination.  You can either bring along a spray bottle of solution, just use water to wet your wipes while on this trip, or mix up some solution at your final destination.  I even use these wipes instead of wash cloths to clean up messy faces and drippy noses!

Keep it Simple!

When traveling with cloth diapers, remember to keep it simple!  You will not be in your normal environment!  I usually choose my easiest diapers for trips – FuzziBunz and Rumparooz pocket diapers!  They are easier to put on your baby, no matter where you have to change the diaper at.  They dry faster than prefolds, and they are a little more compact.  You can also throw in a few extra inserts/doublers to customize the absorption – more for in the car and overnight.

I hope these tips help.  You really can travel with cloth diapers!  We did it when Elaine was only 2 months old, and we took mostly prefolds (we didn’t have as many pocket diapers back then).  We were gone for over 10 days!  It’s not hard, it just takes a little extra planning!

Taking Cloth Diapers on the road, part 1

It’s the end of the summer.  School will be starting soon (or maybe already has for some of you).  Many people I know are taking the last minute vacations and weekend trips before life gets crazy this fall.

I have personally traveled with cloth diapers on the subway system (we live in Brooklyn, NY), on several plane trips, and many car trips.  It is not difficult…in fact it is very doable!

If you are a cloth diapering parent, you may be wondering if it is really feasible to take cloth diapers on your trip.  Whether you are traveling by plane or car, we think that you can very easily travel with cloth diapers!  Here are a few ideas and suggestions to make sure you pack all of the essentials!

Diapers

Don’t forget your diapers!  A general rule would be to bring 8-10 diapers per day, Diaper Stash Pictures or one diaper for every 3 hours or so.  At home I use a mixture of prefolds and pockets.  When I go on the road I prefer to just take my pockets because they are easier.  It also means that I may have to wash a little more frequently.

Liners

If you are like me, you cannot imagine cloth diapering without your diaper sprayer.  So what will you do when you’re not at home with your sprayer close at hand?  There are a couple of options.  First, you could use some flushable liners in your diapers.  These thin liners make it easy to just flick the poo into the toilet and flush.  They will surely make poopy diapers a little easier to clean while you are traveling.

If you use a hybrid diapering system, such as GroVia (formerly GroBaby), or Flip!, then you can purchase the biodegradable, disposable liners, and not have to worry about the cloth at all.

If you choose not to use liners, you may have to dunk your diapers.  You can give them a “swirly” in the toilet by holding tightly to one end, and flushing the toilet while dunking most of the diaper.  The force of the flush will help remove the “ickies” from your diaper, but you may have to do this several times.

You could also throw in some latex gloves to wear while dunking your diaper.  Then just throw the gloves away!

Wet Bag  3BagBrochure600

Don’t ever leave home without your wet bag!  We actually use a couple of wet bags when we travel.  First, we use the Planet Wise hanging wet/dry bag.  This allows us to put clean diapers in the dry pocket on the front, and as they are soiled we place them into the larger waterproof section.  This bag holds over 20 diapers, so you can go a couple of days without worrying about needing to wash.

In the diaper bag we carry a medium sized Planet Wise wet bag.  This goes with us everywhere – to church, on day trips, on the plane, and in the car.  It holds several diapers.  Once we arrive at our destination (whether final, or just for the night), we can refill the wipes and transfer any dirty diapers to the larger wet bag WDM_BlackcurlyQwhich we keep in the trunk.

We also use the Planet Wise mini wet bag to hold our pre-moistened cloth wipes in the diaper bag.  Usually on car trips the diaper bag is in the back seat with Elaine, and holds everything we need while on the road.

Ask the Readers: Your Favorite Diaper?

So we started Doable Diapers with my two favorite brands of cloth diapers – FuzziBunz and Rumparooz.  We also have prefolds because they are a clothdoablediapers_125x125 diapering staple, and we are working to add diaper covers.

I would like to get a little input from my readers on what other diapers to add to the store.  What are your favorites?  Which ones would you like to see me add next?  What is your favorite diaper cover?

Leave a comment and let me know…I can’t wait to hear from you!

Unused Inserts?

Most one size diapers come with two inserts – one large and one small.  For quite a while I have had a pile of these excess inserts sitting on my changing table.  Then today I had an inspiration!

I prefer the one-size Flip diaper cover.  I have several of these, and I usually just Elaine8monthsinFlipDiaper_0001 use them with a prefold diaper and stay-dry liner.  When Elaine was little I would fold the diaper in the angel fold and fasten it with a Snappi.  Now that Elaine doesn’t have as many poopy diapers, I have become rather lazy in my folding.  I now just lay the prefold inside the Flip cover, and snap it on Elaine8monthsinFlipDiaper_0002Elaine.

So my inspiration was this:  I can used my extra inserts in the Flip cover rather than the prefolds.   If I still use a stay-dry liner, it is nearly as good as the Flip inserts that you can buy.  And all of my inserts are in rotation, so they are wearing more evenly.

Maybe you would have figured this out before, and maybe I should have come to it sooner.  But I thought I would pass it on just the same!

Cloth diapers are so easy…

…I can snap them on my baby, in the dark, in the middle of the night, when I am mostly asleep!FB-onesize-crushedberries120

The FuzziBunz diapering system – whether Perfect Size or One Size – is very easy to use.  Some people think that snaps are difficult line up, or that it is difficult to obtain the proper fit with cloth diapers.  I disagree!

Cloth diapers are just as easy to use as disposable diapers.  Actually, I think they are easier to use!  In my experience, disposable diapers do not fasten very well, and they aren’t always secure.  With snaps you don’t have to worry about the diaper falling off, or worse yet – a toddler unfastening it!

Huggies Jeans Diapers

Have y’all seen the new limited edition Huggies Jeans diapers?  I had read about them on Cloth Diaper Blog here.  Apparently, the commercial promoting the diapers was pulled from most networks as being inappropriate.  It was a little crass for a baby product commercial.

Read more about that and view the commercial by running a google search.  I have read that they changed the wording a little bit after the controversy.

When I was in Times Square a couple of weeks ago, I went into the Toys R Us.  There in the front of the store was this huge display:

Doable Diapers - Huggies Jeans in Times Square

Most of the shelves were empty.  So disappointing – there are so many people who don’t even know about cloth diapers!

Here’s what I think about this diaper: I think that the disposable diaper industry has some strong competition from its cloth counterpart, and they are trying anything to generate more sales.  The top three reasons that I hear people give as to why they use cloth diapers are:Doable Diapers - Huggies Jeans in Times Square

  1. Cloth is better for the environment
  2. Cloth saves a lot of money
  3. Cloth is better for my baby

However, another big reason why many people choose cloth is the cute factor.  Come on, let’s face it.  Cloth diapers are soooooo much more cute than disposable diapers!  I think Huggies has realized this fact, and they are trying to compete.

While the jean diapers may be more cute than regular disposables, the fact is that they are still disposable.  You are still paying money for a product that your are going to throw away.  The $11.99 that you spent on that package of diapers could buy a Thirsties or Bummis diaper cover which can be used for 2+ years on this baby, and with the next baby too!  Those limited edition jean diapers are still filled with chemicals and traces of Dioxin that are going to be touching your baby’s delicate skin.  And technically, you are supposed to remove the poo from those ‘sposies, just like you have to from a cloth diaper.

How can you compete with this cuteness?

Elaine9monthsinKissaluvsAIO Elaine8monthsFuzziBunzOneSizeElaine 24 Weeks Toilet Paper Pictures

Elaine 12 Weeks in Diaper  Elaine 6 months diaper laundry

What do you think?  I think you should choose cloth diapers.  They are so much cuter, even than the Huggies Jean diapers, and they will save you money and be better for your baby.

Planet Wise Wet Bags are Here!

You may be wondering… “What exactly is a wet bag?”3BagBrochure400   I’m glad you asked!

A wet bag is a zippered bag that has a waterproof inner lining to keep wet, liquid, and messes contained.  Wet bags are ideal for storing soiled diapers on the go, and the larger wet bags can even replace your diaper pail.

Most products, when they are sewn, have tiny holes where the machine needle went through the fabric.  Planet Wise wet bags use an innovative seam sealing technology to completely seal those holes, insuring that no liquid will escape.  Did you get that?  NO LIQUID WILL ESCAPE, even if you fill the bag with water, and squeeze.

PlanetWiseWetBagDiagram500

Wet bags also help to absorb the odor, so no one will ever know if there are “stinkies” in your bag!

If you choose to use a wet bag for your diaper pail, cleanup is easy!  Just throw it is the washing machine with the rest of your diaper laundry.  (Machine wash and tumble dry low, no bleach).

The Planet Wise Wet bags come in five sizes to meet your every need:WDM_AquaAmbience

  • Mini: 5”x10” – with a zippered dry pouch on the front, great for cloth wipes, cosmetics, etc.
  • Small: 8"x10" - Holds 1-2 diapers
  • Medium: 13"x16" - Holds 8-9 diapers (I carry this size in my diaper bag)
  • Large: 18"x21"  - holds 16-17 diapers
  • Hanging Wet/Dry Bag: 16.5"x27" – holds 20-24 cloth diapers (this has the zippered dry pocket on the front where you can store clean diapers – perfect for trips!)

PWHangingBagonDoor500X750

Avocado Planet Wise also makes a pail liner which is the same great, PVC free, waterproof fabric with an elastic opening to hold the bag tight on most diaper pails.  There is also a wipes pouch which comes with 10 flannel cloth wipes.WP_BlueDotsV2

Wet bags serve many purposes…above and beyond cloth diapering!  Use them to transport wet swim clothes, gym clothes, cosmetics, shoes, and the list goes on!  Order your wet bag today!

Save 10% off when you click this link (expires 8/31/2010).

The Doable Details: Flip One-Size Diaper Cover

Elaine8monthsinFlipDiaper_0002The Flip diapering system is made by bumGenius!.  The Flip cover can be used with the Flip inserts, Flip disposable inserts, or just as a diaper cover over fitted diapers or prefolds.  It is an excellent diaper cover, and one of my favorites!

Features

There are many features that I love about the Flip diaper cover.  First, it is a one-size cover.  There are three rows of three snaps down the front of the cover, allowing you to adjust the rise to small, medium, or large.  This allows you to use the same cover for your baby from 7-35 pounds.  This is an especially great option if you have more than one child in diapers.  You can use the same covers for both of the babies by just adjusting the snaps.  This eliminates the need to purchase multiple covers in multiple sizes.

The Flip diaper cover fastens with snaps, making it very durable.  No velcro/aplix to wear out or make a diaper string in the wash!  The tabs are stretchy, ensuring a great, comfortable fit every time.

There are seven bright and soft colors to choose from in the Flip cover.  They are the same beloved bumGenius! colors such as Zinnia, Ribbit, Moonbeam, Butternut, Blossom, Grasshopper, and Twilight.

Inserts

The Flip cover was designed so that you just “flip” the insert into the diaper pail, wipe down the cover, and re-use.  I re-use my covers multiple times as long as there is no poop on them.  I still rotate the covers between diaper changes so that the used cover can air out a bit, but then I re-use it at the next diaper change.

Elaine8monthsinFlipDiaper_0003

You can use the Flip stay-dry insert or organic insert in your Flip cover.  The inserts can be adjusted to the proper size by folding.  The inserts are very similar to a microfiber insert for a pocket diaper.  Just tuck it under the flaps in the cover, snap on your baby, and you’re set.  The micro-suede cover on the stay-dry insert keeps your baby dry.  For trips or outings you can purchase biodegradable disposable liners to just throw away.

While these are great options, my favorite way to use the Flip cover is over a Elaine8monthsinFlipDiaper_0001prefold.  When my daughter was very young and solely breast-fed, I found that if she pooped while wearing the Flip cover with insert, I ended up with poop on the cover and I had to wash it.  However, if I used the prefold and fastened it around her legs, I was able to contain the mess and re-use the cover.  Now that Elaine is older, the Flip inserts are a great choice, as well as just laying a tri-folded prefold diaper down the center of the cover and snapping it on (without a Snappi).  Or, you may choose to use the Flip cover over your favorite fitted diaper!

Cost

Elaine8monthsinFlipDiaper_0003 You can purchase just the Flip cover for $13.95.  If you want to get an insert with your cover, the package starts at $16.95, depending on whether you choose the stay-dry insert, or the organic cotton insert.  Extra inserts are available for $4.95, or $7.95 for organic.  A package of disposable inserts is $4.95.

The Flip system also comes in a Day Pack starting at $49.95.  This kit includes two Flip covers and six inserts.  The Flip system is very easy to use, and great for day-care or care-givers.  Just “flip” the used insert into the dirty pail, and replace with a fresh one, re-using the cover!

We think you’ll flip over the Flip diapering system by bumGenius!
